Overwhelmed by political news? You’re not alone. In swing state Pennsylvania, voters are more inundated than ever so The Philadelphia Inquirer decided to reach out to voters directly with daily texts about single issues leading up to the 2018 midterm elections, using GroundSource.

Spoiler alert: the voters loved it.

They used content from news articles, phone-friendly GIFs and pics, emojis of course, and even took questions back from people on topics around the economy, gun safety and healthcare.

  • 41% of the audience responded to the texts. Wow!

  • People who clicked the links in the texts stayed on the website twice as long as the average visitor!

  • 83% of people said they’d like to receive more text messages from the Inquirer! Bravo.

They converted multiple paid subscriptions and overall had a tremendous amount of positive feedback on the texts. This open dialogue with their readers increased loyalty, made a monetary impact and gave their staff a great new channel to use for direct engagement with the community.
